BOO!

I love October!  The weather turns nice, I can usually bust out some fall sweaters and boots, and it is the month of HALLOWEEN!  You know what that means...costumes, costumes, costumes!  My family is a bit extreme when it comes to costumes.   We will find any excuse to dress up.  Come to think about, not sure why I classify October as a "costume" month.  After searching through photos for this post, I realized we dress up in costumes every month of the year. Please see below...

Exhibit A:  Dressed up for a Moulin Rouge party (November)

Exhibit B:  Dressed up as my mom's favorite things for her surprise birthday party (March)

Exhibit C:  Dressed up for my dad's birthday dinner (September)

Exhibit D:  Even Christmas is an excuse to dress up (December)

As you can see, Special K and the men in my family are GREAT sports!  They have come to learn that "no" is an unacceptable answer.

I am going to keep L's costume a secret until Halloween!  It is so preshrunken...However, my mom swears she will be turning on me in her teenage years.  L will accuse me of giving her a complex because of her first ever Halloween costume.  Stay tuned!

I have gathered a list of my top 10 favorite baby Halloween costumes!  I tried to find the most unique ones that I had not seen before.  No pumpkins, ghosts, or witches in this bunch.  Some are weird, some are funny, and some are too cute for words.  Enjoy!

#10 Garden Gnome  - If I had not already ordered L's costume, she would definitely be a garden gnome.  There is always next Halloween though (or Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc...).  I love this little girl!

#9  Peanut - Originally I thought this was precious, but on second look, well, never mind...I will be mature about this one ;)

#8  Baby Chicken and Big Chicken - the big chicken might be her Easter outfit...too cute!

#7  Elephant - For all you Republicans out there...

#6  Caterpillar - This one made me laugh

#5 Snail - As did this one...

#4 Octopus - Is this not the most random thing you have ever seen?  I can't decide if I like it or not.  Could be a hit at your neighborhood carnival!

#3 Ram - I am 99% sure this is a joke because it is not for sale anywhere...strange, very, very strange!

#2 Flamingo - Um, HA-styrical, but not sure I am willing to pay $120 for it.

#1 Elvis - If L was a boy, there would be no question what she would be...This Elvis costume is the by far my favorite...please someone get it and send me a picture of your little tyke!  Also, let me know where the baby's arms go???

What is your little one dressing up as?  Did I miss any funny/unique ones?

Please send in your Halloween pictures.  I just may have a contest with a prize :)

Pint-Sized Giveaway

I have been waiting to announce this giveaway for a few weeks now!  Between facebook, blogs, and other social media, I have reconnected with so many old friends.  It has been so fun!  One friend, in particular, Lauren, contacted me to do a giveaway for Keeping it Simple.  I had no idea she had started a children's clothing line, Pint-Sized Clothing and Design.  As described on Facebook, "Pint-Sized is an online boutique offering items at affordable prices.  Everything is made by hand, just for you!"

I ordered L an owl onesie (applique pictured below) and was beyond excited when it came in the mail last week!  Not only was it adorable, but it was also great quality.  The only bad news is I intentionally ordered it a little big, so I have to wait for L to grow into it.  I guess I can contain myself for a few more weeks!!!  I will definitely share the pics with her wearing it when I have them.

Take a look at Lauren's fabulous designs below.  Her dresses are super cute!  I love the dress with ties on the shoulders because you can adjust the ties as your little one grows!

Here are a few of her MANY appliques for onesies including L's owl!

Are you dying to have your one-of-a-kind Pint-Sized outfit yet!?!?

Her dresses run from $38-$50 depending on the size and monogram, and her onesies run from $15-$22.  Her turn around time is around 1-3 weeks.

Today she is giving exclusively to Keeping it Simple a personalized onesie (or $22 credit toward an outfit).  We must earn Pint-Sized 50 likes to qualify for the giveaway.  If we reach the goal, I will announce the winner next Monday.

To enter...

Good Luck!

Happy Birthday to...ARE YOU JOKING?

I recently went to a baby boutique because I had credit to spend.  I was on the hunt for a 1st birthday outfit for L.  I knew it is a couple months away, but I thought I would get her something super cute with the credit.  I found one of those HUMONGO pettiskirts and a cute top with a cupcake on it to match...I fell in love with it and had to have it.  Well, until I saw the price tag..It was pretty similar to the one below.  How much would you think this outfit costs?
La Bella Flora

I am walking through the store with the outfit in hand picturing L running around it while we sing Happy Birthday to her....Then, I see the price tag...$75...Wrong!  $125...Wrong!  $175...DING, DING, DING!  We have a winner!  It seriously made my jaw drop in the middle of the store.  I am sure the sales lady saw me since I was the only one in there at the time.  I have trouble spending that much money on a pair of jeans I will wear every day for two years.  I am still in shock over it.  Even with store credit, I just could not justify it.  I have been searching for a replica of it for less.  Any ideas?

I found one almost exactly like it at Zulily, but it was sold out!  What is Zulily, you may be asking?  If you are a expecting or new mom, you MUST know about Zulily

It is similar to Gilt that I posted about a few weeks ago, but it is ALL about babies, kids, and maternity products.  They post weekly deals from various companies.  Subscribe immediately for some super cute things with fantastic prices.  Here is the Bella Daniella skirt ($24.99) and top ($24.99) I found for a much better deal than the whopping $175.  I am sick I missed it!

Let me know if you find anything similar for a good price or any other preshrunken birthday outfits for that matter.

Football Friday

I am so thrilled about today's guest post!  An old camp friend of mine, Merritt, has a fantastic fashion blog called Manolos and Martinis.  Definitely bookmark her for a daily read!

She has recently been voted Best Twitterer in Houston by the Houston Press and has launched her own marketing and design firm, Merritt Beck Media

She is oh-so talented and accomplished! Not to mention her amazing style!  Here is a pic of her the night she accepted her Best Twitterer award.  As the Harvard Sailing Team would say, "Supe cute outfit!"

Merritt posted a popular series recently called Football Fridays.  I invited her to create a Maternity Edition of Football Friday for Keeping it Simple to kickoff the beginning of the college football season this weekend!  She found some fab outfits for you TCU, SMU, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and University of Texas fans!  Can you guess which on is my favorite?  Click here for a hint.

Thank you Merritt for your fashion expertise!

Happy Labor Day!  I wish I had a rocking outfit for the weekend like this little gal!

PS - I am so happy today because I not only get to meet one precious baby at lunch, but two!  Two of my great friends are at the same hospital and delivered 12 hours apart.  New friends for L!!!!

Happy Gifting

Growing up I took acting lessons at the local theatre.  I liked  being in plays and dressing up in costumes, but we weren't die hard about it.  My mom was never the Toddlers and Tiaras type.  She would take me to/from class, help me memorize lines at home, and watch my end of semester plays.  Pretty standard mom stuff really...no voodoo dolls for the other kids or plots of revenge on the smother mothers back stage.

Initially, I went to these classes because my sister (3 years older) did and I followed suit.  She always got the lead because she could not only act, but sing.  I honestly thought my voice sounded exactly like her.  I had all the confidence in the world at auditions.  I would belt out the song "Daisy" as loud as I could because louder meant better, right? WRONG!  I was horrible!  I could have definitely qualified for American Idol's worst auditions.  I was (and still am) completely tone deaf!  In my head, I sounded fabulous!

My mom said it was always a difficult thing to tell my sister she got a part in the play, but I didn't.  Pretty big cop out by the theatre to call the house and make my mom do the dirty work, but show business is cut-throat, even at the local youth theatre in Fort Worth.  I cried many tears over these lost parts.  I recently found an apology note I typed (yes, using an actual typewriter) to my sister because I was mad she got the part and I didn't.

In case you are having trouble reading it (I can't see why), it says, "DAER SISTER, CONGRAGLASHANS IAM SO SORRY THAT I WAS SUCH A BRAT PLAESE FORGIVE ME PLEASE I HOPE YOU DO GOOD AS A SNO BUNNY LOVE J."  My mom hand wrote on the letter what had happened because I think she knew we would not be able to make heads or tails of this in the future: "Janann wrote to sister Nov 19, 1989 after sister got the part in Frosty the Snowman and she didn't."

I feel sorry for for the 7-year old me, well, for a lot of reasons.

  1. I clearly did not know how to spell or punctuate.
  2. I could not load the paper into the typewriter correctly.
  3. For feeling such rejection at such a young age.
In the long run, I think it was a good lesson to learn I wasn't talented in that department early before I demanded my entire family move to Hollywood to pursue my acting career.  (By the way, I am pretty sure my sister forgave me after receiving this note.  How could she not sympathize with her untalented, tone deaf sister who was clearly not the sharpest crayon in the box.  Plus, I am pretty sure the letter is stained with tear marks...so sad!!!)

I have mourned the loss of my acting career and accepted the fact this was left best for my sister.  Acting classes proved to be a very poor investment.  Unfortunately for me,  as I have gotten older, acting comes into play all the time.  Pretending to listen in class, acting like you know what you are talking about at your first job, and gift opening in front of a group are all things that require advanced acting skills and improv.  Not shocking given my acting background, but I am the all-time worst gift opener in crowds!  I can't fake that I like something.  For my baby shower, we displayed unwrapped gifts so I would not have to open them.  During our engagement, Special K and I didn't have any showers, only engagement parties with no gifts.  It gives me so much anxiety thinking about opening gifts in front of a crowd.

I might be the world's worst gift receiver (and singer), but I am great at gift giving!  When I find the perfect gift for someone else, it truly makes me happy!  I would like to implement a new series today, Happy Gifting, to follow up on "Can You Improve a Classic?" post.  At this stage in life it is so hard to buy expensive gifts for all the different weddings, birthdays, showers, house warming, etc..., so I will periodically post unique baby gifts under $40, but with a higher perceived value (WOW!  I am pretty sure that sentence was not grammatically correct...I am afraid the 7 year old me is haunting the present day me for posting that letter).  I hope I give you the happiness of finding the perfect gift for the new baby in your life.

Today's gift:  A friend gave L a little Polo romper that I loved and hated the day when she grew out of it.  I did some research for a replacement and found out Ralph Lauren has a huge line of baby polos.

All adorable, but this is no ordinary line!  It is called "Create Your Own Collection."  They let you customize the monogram.  You can choose between outfit style, outfit color, monogram (horse or initials), monogram color, and monogram style (if using initials).  Just a few examples below...

Monogramming makes gifts seem so much more personal.  The best news is this entire line is $35 or less including the customization!  Happy monogramming!  What do you think?

GIVEAWAY: Barefoot Designs

Affordable custom-made baby clothes...I know this sounds too good to be true, but it isn't!

I have had Barefoot Designs in my head as a pending post for a while now.  Amy has such a great eye for fabric and the cutest designs!  She lets you pick the fabric, applique, monogramming, size, and design all for a price range of around $20-$45.  All of her options for outfits are posted on her facebook page and her blog

You must plan ahead though.  She has become so popular there is a 2-3 week wait before your outfit is shipped.  I congratulate her on her growing business!  She has just hired two seamstresses and embroiderer and is in the process of creating a website.  Both of these things should help with a quicker turn around time in the future.  She has started carrying other brands including Monag, J. Lisandra, and Mint and hopes to start a new Barefoot Designs custom bedding as well.

On top of the cute clothes, Amy is simply the sweetest!  She said, "I always pray for each sweet little one that I'm working on something for and send a hand written note telling the parents this and a bible verse. I feel like this is not just a business, but a calling to pray for God's little ones!"

I have a great UT Longhorns game-day outfit coming for L and will definitely post pictures of it when I get it.  My friend uses her all the time and the outfits are such great quality!  A few examples of her work below (yes, she does little boy clothes too, but I am partial to the girl stuff):

When I contacted Amy with a few questions about her company for this post, she was nice enough to offer a GIVEAWAY!  She is giving away a $15 gift certificate to use towards any outfit!

To enter you must do all three things listed below:
The winner will be randomly selected and announced next Monday (7/18)!  Good luck!

PS - Barefoot Designs is currently having a sale on monogrammed bloomers.  Get one pair for $10 or two for $16.  This is a great baby gift!!!

COUPON ALERT: 25% off at Gap

Stock up on baby and maternity clothes from the Gap.  Also, think about buying baby clothes for next summer too.  Savings code: GAPSAVENOW, offer ends Friday.

$ave $ome $crilla: Smock-tions

This one goes out to everyone (except my friends that refuse to open facebook accounts)...mothers, expecting mothers, grandparents, fathers, aunts, uncles, and friends.

I know I have mentioned I am cheap (shoot!  I mean thrifty) before.  Shopping, in general, is always a challenge.  I talk myself out of buying everything before I make it to the register.  It took me three trips to the same boutique during college to buy my first pair of designer jeans.  I almost broke into a cold sweat when they swiped my card.

This is not a good quality when I want to go splurge on a precious outfit for L at the local specialty shop, and it is $70.  She may wear it twice?!?!

Well, my friends, the cold sweats at the register can stop!  The newest craze on facebook is Smocked Auctions.  They hold auctions weekly and sell baby clothes at half the price.  Not to mention, if you (like me), love the rush of rolling the dice at the craps table, this is for you!  You must go and "like" their page on facebook to be able to participate.  Each page instructs you on how and when to bid on their items.  They have mostly smocked items, but have other things as well.  Here are a couple I have really liked: Smocked Auctions, Smock it to Me, and Rocking Smocking (the third one just started, so there are less people to compete with ;) )

Happy Smocking (just don't bid on the items I want...jk)!!!!

Just received this item from Smocked Auctions!  Precious!

Luella and June Inspired

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT:  The "Pregnant ≠ Paisley" post has been the most popular post so far!  I hear ya!  The maternity options out there can be pretty depressing.  I am introducing a new series of posts thanks to my friends at Luella and June.  They are giving me a heads up on their trend alerts, so I can research to the end of the internet looking for maternity clothes that reflect the current trend. Just because you can't shop at your favorite stores, doesn't mean you can't be trendy!  Look for the "Luella and June Inspired" posts going forward.

Here is one for today!

Luella and June: FEELING FLORAL

Over the Shoulder Boulder Holder

An expectant mother due in one week asked me about nursing bras.  I quickly bumped it up the priority list based on her due date!  Let me know if you are seeking any advice before your due date.  I can do my best to answer or post your question on the blog for other mothers to answer.

I went a little too crazy on the nursing bras before L got here.  I bought three!  When I got home from the hospital, realized they were all too small.  A “boulder” holder is definitely the right term after your baby comes!   My sweet mother-in-law was kind enough to exchange them for me.  After a few weeks, I realized I hardly wore any of them.  When nursing, you sleep in a bra (or I did), and the nursing bras were not comfortable.

I would recommend buying 2-3 of the tank bras from Gap Body or Victoria’s Secret

Go up a size or two from your current bra to be safe.  In my opinion, better too big than too small.  Remember you will be wearing nursing pads or gold catchers underneath them, so it is ok if there is a little extra room.  They worked great in the middle of the night because you could maneuver them around easily without having to take them completely off (Apologies if that is TMI).

I did not buy any of the nursing tanks or shirts and didn't really miss them either.  I don't think they are necessary.

Side note – If you have purchased one of the hands-free breast pumps, they hook on to the nursing bras.  You will need to buy one if you will be using this feature.

Edward Scissorhands

A baby nurse at the hospital referred to infants as marionettes because they do not have much control over their limbs yet.  She was so right!  L’s arms would just flail around all over the place.  Also, at this age, their fingernails can grow very quickly and get so long.  This is not a good combo.  I would wake up to find little cuts on her face.  Not wanting her to end up looking like Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands,  I did my best to keep up with her “manicures” by using a nail file that comes in most infant grooming kits.  It was still hard to get them just right.  I didn’t have much luck with the nail clippers either, they don't seem to do the trick.  It was always hard to find a time when she wasn’t asleep and wasn’t flailing around to be able to file them.  It was often a two-person job.

Luckily, someone gave me these awesome Gerber Shirts at my baby shower...

The key is the cuffs that you can fold over their little hands when they sleep protecting them from their fingernails.  I found these plain white shirts were all L wore the first 6 weeks.  Her blankets were her biggest accessories and these matched them all (they also come in Pink and Blue).

Another great thing about these shirts is that they don’t snap at the bottom.  These make the late night diaper changes a little quicker.  I promise you will want this process to be as efficient as possible at 4am.

A THIRD reason to buy these shirts is the side snap.  It can be really nerve-racking dressing your baby at this age.  They are just so fragile.  I loved these shirts because I didn’t have to go over L’s head.

I would register for 3, two-packs of these in the 0-3 month size.   We only had two and found ourselves rushing to get them washed.  Gerber has SO many types of plain white baby clothes…make sure it has cuffs, no bottom snaps, and has the front, side snap.

Side note - Kissy Kissy is another great brand that has cuffed outfits, but they are more on the expensive side.  Definitely register for some of these at your local specialty shop.  They come in precious patterns, are extremely soft, and most long-sleeved items have cuffs.
